Lightning Strikes Twice

Lightning Strikes Twice

Hello and welcome,

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning is special for being the only truly successful twin engine fighter that the US Army Air Force deployed in WWII.  That being said, there were other twin engine fighters notably; the Northrop P-61 "Black Widow" used mostly as a night fighter (of which one has recently been restored), the Grumman F7F "Tigercat" and the North American F-82 "Twin Mustang" (of which one has also been recently restored).  Arguably, these aircraft did not have a high volume of production during the war nor did they see much in the way of combat.  There were a few experimental types such as the Grumman F5F "Skyrocket" and and the Grumman XP-50, as well as the Lockheed XP-49 and XP-58, both improved derivatives of the P-38.  This blog post shows a Lockheed P-38L and is an editing iteration of my original post titled "Lightning Over Oregon" posted June 1, 2023.  I have an affinity for black and white "period" looking images of WWII aircraft.  They just have an air of authenticity which I lean in to.  I hope you enjoy the image and would love to hear your thoughts in the comment box.  Thanks for looking!
