Memphis Belle

Memphis Belle

Hello and thanks for looking!  Who doesn't like the Thunderbolt II, right? I mean that Gatling mini gun, which the entire aircraft was built around, is a weapon of pure destruction.  Anyone who has even the slightest interest in this ground support jet knows about the distinct "Brrrrrrat" sound the gun makes when it fires gives it a certain "awe" factor.  This particular jet is part of a two ship demonstration team based out of Davis-Monthan AFB.  If you look at the yellow strip on the right engine nacelle, you can read "Memphis Belle III".  This is a clear nod to the famous B-17 Flying Fortress that was the first to finish flying 25 missions out of East Anglia, England during WWII.  That B-17 that went on a bond drive tour around the country to help raise funds for the war effort.  It now is on display at the National Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, OH.  It's nice to see the Air Force continuing to remember the past and to carry that war fighter attitude to the next generation of combat crews.
