I was looking back at all of my blog posts to date and was surprised to see I only have a couple of images with P-51 Mustangs, and one of those was a really nice USAF heritage flight with a P-51 and an F-35 in formation. For such an iconic warbird, I might have leaned in and posted many more of my Mustang photos because it is such a fan favorite. What has happened over the last several years is that I have taken a LOT of other good photos beyond the Mustang. It would be too easy to showcase the Mustang every third blog post. On some level, I chose to expand my subject matter if for nothing else variety for both myself and my readers. This post features the P-51D 'VAL HALLA' wearing the Icelandic Defense Force markings. Personally, the markings are one of my favorite and reflect the markings of Maj. General Bill Anders who not only was a fighter pilot but an astronaut on the Apollo 8 mission and was one of
. The aircraft name is blend of his wife's name, Val and Halla. Valhalla in Norse mythology, is the majestic hall where slain warriors reside after death. Gen. Bill Anders passed away a year ago in a tragic plane crash. This photo was taken at the Heritage Flight Museum in Burlington, WA. There is a display there dedicated to Bill Anders' and his Apollo 8 mission.
