"Jets are for Kids" - Douglas AD-1 Skyraider
The Douglas AD-1 Skyraider is an American single-seat attack aircraft in service from 1946 to the early 1980s. It earned its reputation during the Vietnam War as a tough aircraft, able to loiter in a combat zone to support ground troops. With its fifteen external hard-points it had a payload capacity of 8,000 lb (3,600 kg), more than a WWII B-17. The Skyraider had a remarkably long and successful career; it became a piston engined anachronism in the Jet Age, and was nicknamed "Spad", after the French World War I fighter. This aircraft, 'The Proud American' is owned by the Heritage Flight Museum in Burlington, WA. This photo was a juried finalist in the Plane & Pilot magazine 2023 "Your Flying World" photo contest.
