The P-47D "Thunderbolt" was truly a heavyweight fighter.  In fact, it holds the distinction of being the heaviest single-seat fighter of World War II. With a fully loaded weight of up to 8 tons, the Thunderbolt was a formidable presence in the skies. Despite its weight, it was effective, both as a high-altitude fighter and a fighter-bomber.

Equipped with a dual-stage turbo supercharger, the P-47D excelled at high-altitude combat. Its powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine contributed to its impressive speed and performance, ranking it among the fastest fighters of the war.

The Thunderbolt was a workhorse in the fighter-bomber role, carrying 5-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg). This made it versatile, capable of not only engaging enemy aircraft but also striking ground targets. The eight Browning .50 caliber machine guns mounted provided a devastating punch in combat.

What truly set the P-47 apart though was its heavy armor protection, which made it extremely difficult to shoot down. This robust design led to the Thunderbolt having the lowest loss rate of any Allied fighter during WWII. The plane could endure incredible amounts of damage and still return to base.  The Thunderbolt's combination of speed, firepower, durability, and versatility made it a cornerstone of the Allied air forces.
