First flown in 1949, the aircraft was used as a primary trainer for the US Navy and US Air Force. A total of 1,948 examples were built. Besides its use as a trainer, the T-28 was successfully employed as a counter-insurgency aircraft, primarily during the Vietnam War. The type was finally retired from active service with the Philippine Air Force in 1994. It has continued in civilian use as an acrobatic and warbird performer.
